Cosmos Spiritus / Nûr Version 1

Cosmos Spiritus / Nûr Version 1

2005, France, 16mm, colour, silent, 7 min.

In Islam, the light has a sacred name, Nûr, because “Allah is the light of heaven and earth”. “Following this surah of the Koran, it was traditionally established the equivalence between the two terms en-Nür, the light, and Er-Rüh, the spirit...”, in Encyclopédie des symboles page 378, pocket-book.

This short film was made during the winter of 2004-2005 with a montage of the falls from the film Tischk (the ray), co-directed with Mahine Rouhi. …Beyond the simple analogies between the art of the stained glass and the projection of cinematographic films (or the simple observation on a light table), it takes into account different beliefs and representations of “God” by the light. Among these different representations, I’m interested only in the poetic and artistic forms (decorative, abstract, figurative, etc...) At the expense of religious dogma, schisms and struggles. That means to look at the art that elevates the soul of the human being beyond his material condition, both in the celestial ether and in the visual poetry. Here, the problem of representation of "God in human form" is exceeded by assimilating it to the light of the Cosmos. There remain only the contemplative visions of mystical ecstasy.
