On January 28, 1986 the Challenger (mission 51-dash-L) set out to observe Halleys Comet from space but exploded 78 seconds into the launch killing everyone on board. A monument to the Japanese-American Challenger astronaut Ellison J. Onizuka stands in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo.
I made three graphite rubbings onto paper from his monument, and later filmed them to emphasize the haiku structure of the text.
