The magnetism of knowing and not knowing

The magnetism of knowing and not knowing

My concert for the Independent Film Show 18th edition will take on the shape of a performance in which sound structures will be developed live on the basis of ‘instant composing’ (call it improvisation if you wish), using a concert zither, effect- and loop-pedals, software (for live-input-processing) and a lot of small parts to interfere with the strings of the zither (mallets, brushes, metal springs, slide, bow, etc.).

Once a satisfying self-mixing structure is developed it might be left alone for some time (or not), possibly allowing myself to step back and listen to the evolving self-mixing transformations. I might get back to further interfere with the setup, overdub, etc., or even restart the concert from zero (or not).

quote:

[Schreiner] evokes Anton Karas on mescaline; post-war Vienna, and the imaginative space of cinema. Schreiner’s interest in 19th century spiritism suggests an affinity for the improvisatory, the magnetism of knowing and not knowing.

Regarding live performance, Schreiner has said, “I try to construct setups I’m not able to control entirely; setups that have potential to surprise me or that are just too complex to be securely managed in all their parameters, without losing the overview.”

LeRoy Stevens, from his notes on Some Personal Appearances, 2016

Concerts using a similar solo-setup happened at MAK (Frankfurt), Decent Sounds (Berlin), Direktion (Frankfurt), Blurred Edges Festival (Hamburg) and Drogerie (Braunschweig).

A solo-LP of studio-recorded zither pieces titled Some Personal Appearances was released by Los Angeles based label Small World in 2016.

Another LP, a collaboration with Thomas Bayrle titled WARP WEFT was released the same year by the same label.
