1979-80, UK, Super 8/Mini DV, colour, sound by Jane Fredericks, 9 min.
After fourteen months constructing his own house, Colin Fredericks and his family invite three generations of working class relations to come together in the comfort of their new home, to celebrate the arrival of new hopes and the departure of old ones. New Years Eve. A calendar date celebrated the world over. Young and old enjoy the fun and expenditure of an enhanced convivial occasion. As the music plays and the wine flows, the pressures of the working year are forgotten. We can select members of the Fredericks clan and watch their ludic escapades, as they transform into Charlie Chaplin, Sally Bowles, Alice in Wonderland, The Saint Trinians girl and many other timeless characters, at a party of pantomime, fancy dress and cabaret, brilliantly captured by the close framing and spot lighting of the hand-held camera work. A small film full of atmospheric qualities that speaks volumes for the richness of super 8 as a medium.
