An artistic vision of the Russian alphabet. A combination of collage and non-camera animation. In the mid 1990s, I found two 35mm films from the Armature Film Studios of the '70s. Without any definite plan, I began to ink-draw and needle-scratch my own ideas onto this unused footage, which had been gathering dust at the lab. It was a long, time-consuming and laborious job but by meter #50 I understood that this technique of inserting a drawing into a ready-made image could give new meaning to the frame. By now I have tried many different techniques. And I have realized that you need nothing more than celluloid and some basic materials to make a film; you can do anything you want. Materials vary: ink, water-based markers, alcohol-based markers, printers' ink... I tried putting different layers onto the celluloid, as one would on a traditional palette. Working directly with film gives you absolute freedom and independence from studios, money, actors, and other elements which are built into the film industry. The longer I work with this technique, the more possibilities become available to me.
