2 Chinesische Zeichen (Two Chinese Signs)

1982, Germany, 16mm, colour, sound, 2x2 min.

Short and intense Image/Sound montage where out of focus swans meet slowed down music and the image of a head is accompanied by a split second “oh haupt voll blut und wunden” by Bach, just enough to evoke the thought. The film is a constant and rapid succession and few more examples can be pointed out: a closing door is synched to a feature film voice saying, “ten thousand dollars just to leave this stinking town”, followed by fast edited sequences of Frankfurt, Germany. This film is one of the most virtuous and elaborate montages in sound film and could be the prototype for a whole new understanding and production of film.
