Jan van Munster refers to himself as an 'energetic sculptor'. In the Netherlands he is mostly known for his objects in public spaces, mostly minimal, luminous forms made out of neon tubes, or enigmatic black granite shapes. Jan van Munster regards 'energy' as a universal, primeval force, on which all phenomena are founded. Energy is for van Munster both the theme and the material. Its presence is implicit in materials that have been formed through energy, such as granite an glass, but energy can also explicitly and literally manifest itself in artificially created heat, cold and light or in other forms of charged energy. He regards the circle as a privileged form because energy often manifests itself in the form of a circle, and Van Munster made several sculptures made out of curved neon segments that relate to the size of his own body as he emphasizes the relationship to himself, the artist. At the beginning of the 1970's, by way of research into these themes, Jan Van Munster made about ten films and video's. In his two works entitled Circles we see the artist himself, standing frontally in the center of the image, peering into the camera while holding a light bulb on a long flex in his hands. With regular movements, he swings the bulb round and round. At first in small circles, but the more he releases the flex, the larger the circles become. The phenomena visual phenomena caused by this movement depend on the medium used for registration, so Van Munster made a film version as well as a video version of these piece.
