2008, Belgium, video performance, b/w, sound, 16 min.
A screen split in four parts like the monitors of a security camera, on which electric shock treatment images downloaded from the website youtube confront images filmed by the artist in public spaces and captured on the virtual game world SecondLife. In order to film people in public spaces (one of Brussel’s most popular commercial areas), Pascale Barret uses a hidden video camera pointed at herself. Her Avatar Sleepwind Dix is, in contrast, all alone in the SecondLife world. The fourth screen shows data from the psychiatric reference book DSM. Published as a directory by the American Psychiatry Association, the DSM was progressively imposed upon the psychiatric community as a guideline for professionals in the identification and diagnosis of psychic syndromes. The video is set to the fervent harpsichord of Bach's Partitas.
