1982, Netherlands, 16mm, colour, sound, 5 min.
This film was the second abstract film made by Bart Vegter, after a first film which only consisted of horizontal movements. In Need of Space is based on the dimensions of the film frame. All its movements are based on the rotation of a cube which exactly fits these dimensions and does not change its size. By changing the colours of lines and planes different aspects of the rotating movement are shown; there is a continuous alteration between lines and planes , hard and soft colors, transparancy and opacity.
"The film reflects a certain feeling, of something that is closed in and needs expansion, something that needs space. I chose the music of Steve Reich because that music has no beginning and no end, it dissolves boundaries, and it doesn't have the tiring aspects of most music; that you have to pay attention to climaxes, something monumental, a kind of architecture which you have to follow and understand, which you have to like or dislike. Here, if you are tired you can doze off and listen again later; you will not have missed anything. The film could also be shown in a loop, continuously repeated."
