1998, USA, 16mm, colour &-b/w, sound, 10 min. 30 sec.
Originally shot in June ‘97 at a Philip Hoffman's film retreat in rural Ontario, the film was made in the memory of Marian McMahon, an experimental Canadian filmmaker who died of cancer in the fall of 1996. We are going Home has been hand-processed, solarized, chemically treated, and optically printed to invoke a surreal mood for the wanderings of several characters through a pastoral setting. Rhythmic color and tonal shifts in the film emulsion give life to the physical landscape, which comes to represent an internal terrain of the subconscious. Three main characters act in parallel universes, attempting to but never able to intersect. Characters are ever equally conscious at the same time. When one finds another, she is either buried in the sand or asleep under a tree. Consciousness is always singular.
